Every year, the Fête des Gardians transforms the city of Arles into a veritable living theatre of Provençal traditions. In 2026, this iconic event will take place on Friday 1 May, celebrating Saint George, patron saint of the gardians, those famous horsemen of the Camargue.
From 9am, the gardians and the women of Arles in traditional costume gather on the Boulevard des Lices before parading through the historic streets. The procession crosses the city to the church of Notre-Dame de la Major, where the blessing of the horses takes place, a deeply moving moment.
At midday, the crowd gathers at Place de la République for the traditional distribution of blessed bread, before continuing the celebrations in the legendary Arles arena. In the afternoon, it’s time for the show: games played by the gardians, equestrian displays and Camargue traditions offer a unique spectacle blending elegance, power and skill.
